Quantitative Survey Analysis
Frequency analysis. Shows how many respondents selected each answer option. The most basic form of survey analysis and the starting point for almost every survey report.
Mean and median scores. Used for rating scale and numeric questions. Mean scores allow comparison across time and segments; median scores are more robust when the data has outliers.
Cross-tabulation. Breaks results down by respondent subgroup — by age, department, region, or any other variable collected in the survey. Cross-tabs reveal whether different groups answered differently and are among the most actionable outputs of any survey.
Trend analysis. Compares results across multiple survey waves to identify whether metrics are improving, declining, or stable over time. Requires consistent question wording and scales across waves.
Correlation analysis. Measures the degree to which two variables move together. Commonly used in employee engagement surveys to identify which drivers are most strongly correlated with overall engagement scores.

Qualitative Survey Analysis
Open-ended questions produce text that cannot be counted directly. Analysing it requires different methods.
- Manual coding. Assigning thematic tags to each response. A researcher reads through responses and groups them into categories: complaints about delivery, positive comments about staff, suggestions for new features, and so on. This is thorough but time-consuming at scale.
- Sentiment analysis. Classifying responses as positive, neutral, or negative, either manually or using natural language processing (NLP) tools. Useful for a high-level read of open text without reading every response.
- Word frequency analysis. Identifying the words and phrases that appear most often. A useful first pass but prone to overweighting common words unless stopwords are filtered.

Common Survey Analysis Mistakes
Reporting averages without distributions. A mean score of 3.8 out of 5 looks fine until you see that 40 percent of respondents scored 1 or 2 and 60 percent scored 5. Always check the distribution behind the average.
Ignoring non-response. If a large proportion of your sample did not complete the survey, the respondents who did may not represent the broader group. Before reporting findings, consider whether non-respondents are systematically different.
Over-interpreting small differences. A difference of 2 percentage points between two groups may be within the margin of error. Use confidence intervals and significance testing before concluding that a difference is real.
Treating correlation as causation. Two variables moving together in your survey data does not mean one causes the other. Report correlations accurately and avoid causal language unless you have experimental data.
Not segmenting the data. Overall averages often mask important differences between subgroups. A satisfaction score of 7.5 that looks acceptable may hide a score of 4 among your most valuable customer segment.
How to Present Survey Analytics
The goal of presentation is to make findings as easy as possible for the audience to understand and act on. A few principles guide this:
Lead with the finding, not the method. State what the data shows before explaining how it was calculated.
Match the chart type to the data. Bar charts for comparisons, line charts for trends, pie charts only when proportions of a whole are the main point.
Round numbers where precision is not meaningful. Reporting 47.3 percent versus 48.1 percent as a key finding implies more precision than most survey data warrants.
Include the sample size. Findings from 50 respondents warrant different confidence than findings from 2,000.
